Leadership Isn't About Feeling Ready

Leadership Isn't About Feeling Ready

One of the most overlooked leadership lessons comes from Moses. When asked to lead, Moses didn't immediately step forward with confidence. He questioned his qualifications, he questioned his abilities, and he questioned whether anyone would follow him.

In one of the most human moments in Scripture, Moses tells God:

" But Moses pleaded with the Lord, “O Lord, I’m not very good with words. I never have been, and I’m not now, even though you have spoken to me. I get tongue-tied, and my words get tangled.” (Exodus 4:10) (NLT)

In other words, he focused on what he lacked rather than what he was being called to do. I have learned that some of the most important leadership moments happen before action. They happen in the tension between:

"I don't know if I can."

and

"I know I should."

The hard calls—and the opportunities to lead in ways we never imagined—rarely arrive when we feel fully prepared.

Leadership is not the absence of doubt. It is moving forward despite it. Many of the opportunities that define our careers come disguised as assignments we'd rather avoid. Sometimes the question isn't whether we're ready.

Sometimes the question is are we willing.

What is a leadership challenge you initially felt unqualified for but ultimately grew through?
